A real-time turn-based strategy video game

Hero's Hour is a turn-based strategy game that was created by indie developer, ThingOnItsOwn. It is inspired by the popular Heroes of Might and Magic video game franchise that was released on PCs back in the 1990s. Much like the game that it's based on, this indie game title features heroes that you can take control of to recruit armies, explore the map, gather resources, and engage in strategic combat, all in real-time.

A battlefield simulated in real-time

The developer of Hero's Hour made effort to emphasize the meaning behind the game's title, saying that the "Hour" refers to the more fast-paced gameplay. He also added that the combat takes place on a real-time simulated battlefield. If you're a fan of the Heroes of Might and Magic franchise, you'll find key similarities between these two as you play. From the resources to the gameplay mechanics, and even the map quest structure, it will all feel familiar to you.

Hero's Hour features 25 maps that are randomly generated for you to explore. There are also 6 factions to choose from, with each one having its own set of unique creatures and upgrade. The heroes that you can take control of will have 28 skills that you can level up and experiment with to fit your playstyle. When it comes to spells, you get quite a lot, with a total of 53 spells at your disposal.

As you make your way through each map and battlefield, there are 30 adventure items to take note of, as well as 120 unique artifacts to collect. Hero's Hour is still in active development, thus some bugs are to be expected. Some issues involve win-condition events not triggering, while some have to do with the game's AI that just seems to aimlessly run all over the place despite being given specific orders and commands.

A faithful interpretation of a classic strategy game

In conclusion, Hero's Hour remains faithful to its source material and has created a video game that fans of the long-running Might and Magic series will appreciate. While there are still plenty of bugs and issues to iron out, this strategy game is shaping up quite well and has the potential to be quite a good one once given some time to address its major shortcomings.

PROS

  • Faithful interpretation of the classic Heroes of Might and Magic games
  • Real-time strategic battles
